GLENDALE MEMORIAL CEMETERY NEWSLETTER

FALL/WINTER - 2008

Another year almost gone - the older we get, the faster it goes and we find ourselves wondering where the summer went.  Response to these newsletters is always positive; people tell us they enjoy any news from here.  There are several web sites with local news besides ours: www.tymewyse.com/gmca .  The historical society, which features newsletters also, is www.springermartinhouse.com.  And there's the alumni web site: www.glendalealumni.com.  From each of these sites you can link to the other plus a web site for the schools and the city.  Most interesting - if you're a computer user.

THERE WILL BE WATER - !!!  This past summer, Mayor John Poore proposed donating water for the cemetery, as was done in the past.  City council agreed with him and we were notified of the donation.  The old water lines are no longer useable so a line will be put in from the city meter at the front gate, up through a 6-foot alley in the Original section, to the pavilion.  Water will be available for the months of May and June, for watering flowers.  Because we don't want vandals to turn on faucets and leave water running, only one or two outlets will be installed.  To turn on the water will require a special "snap-in" faucet that in itself, turns on the water.  Forrest and Norma (Myers) Peil and Harry Cool donated the funds used for the cemetery's part of the water installation and Kris Nace and Larry Diltz will be installing the water line later this winter.

It will be great to have water available again!  For many years the city donated water to the cemetery, until the mid-1990's when a newcomer to this area protested having to pay a water bill he got stuck with, when one of his renters skipped out without paying.  By the time the dust settled, the man had caused unbelievable trouble for the city in general - and free water to city councilors AND the cemetery, had to be discontinued.  (Councilors and the mayor got free water for serving in their public capacities.)  Our cemetery group very much appreciates the donation of water and will not take advantage of that use.  THANK YOU, Mr. Mayor - and council members, Allen King, Jim Standard, Karen Mehl, Bud Elder, and Fred Jensen.

A new flag pole was purchased  for the World War II Memorial at the front of the Original section.  The old flag pole consisted of lengths of lead water pipe and the pulley system had long ago, deteriorated.  Anthony Grounds has installed the new pole and Phil Jensen's Tree Service, in doing some needed tree trimming and dead limb removal, trimmed an arch in the two tall cedar trees in front of that War Memorial.   Those changes are a great improvement.

****Note: At Hazle Whaley's graveside service, her good friend of many years, Mable Stapleton, read a poem she had written.  When she finished reading, there was not a dry eye amongst those present.  Not only was Mable a good friend of Hazles, she saw her through the beginning of Alzheimer's - right to the end - Mable was at the care facility when Hazle drew her last breath.  Mable has given her permission to copy her tribute in this newsletter:

The last few years have been so bad, to think of them makes me sad.

The proper words are hard to find, to describe the illness that took your mind.

I watched it come bit by bit and there was no way I could stop it.

We've been friends for many years, some things we did were not too bright,

Like shopping all day and into the night,

Getting up at the crack of dawn, to make the sales at The Bon.

We would come home tired and beat, hardly able to stand on our feet.

Our car was loaded to the hilt - and no, we did not feel any guilt

Because we love clothes and shoes and such, and can you really have too much?

Our years of bowling in Grants Pass, it seems our team just came in last.

We tried so hard to master that game but it always turned out the same.

I think back when you lost Ben, you cared for him until the end.

You loved your family there was no doubt, and isn't that what life is really all about?

There are many other things I could say, but I'll save those for another day.

At last there is peace - you're not alone, the Lord above has taken you home.

Goodbye my friend, I'll miss you so, but you are in a better place, this I know.

On these newsletters you see names of the board members of the Glendale Memorial Cemetery Association.  There are many individuals and businesses within this valley, who contribute to the cemetery and need kudos for what they do.  Glendale's Neighborhood Watch group makes regular patrols thru the cemetery each night.  These individuals have a gate key and are diligent about checking.  Glenway Superstore - Jeff Cotta,  donates snacks and drinks to our cleaning sessions, when school students work at the cemetery and for the Community Cleaning in May.  Marv and Polly Eels at Glendale Hardware are strong supporters.  Andy and Marian Owens provide both physical and monetary support.  Every session for cleaning, whether for scheduled ones or for odd days preparing for a burial service, Ted and Cele Booth are there.  Ted has been placing the bronze-in-cement markers and affixing the 1x5-inch name plates on the memorial.  Other local residents and businesses help when they can - and of course, the good people at Hull and Hull Funeral Directors and Hawthorne Memorial Cemetery in Grants Pass.  THANK YOU, EVERYONE and have happy, peaceful and SAFE holidays...

 With all good wishes from.............

Vickie, Rose, Betty Ann, Norma, Melanie, Jeff, Harvey, Lynne and families
