Sether Ranch & Before

The Sether Ranch sits on the homestead that has evolved over the years.  This is because the property was part of the Barton Family holdings which was sold to Russian immigrants to form the community of Odessa in 1883.  The land chosen for the Odessa colony was composed of a reported 760 acres, most of it being the old Barton homestead adjoining the Redfield Donation Land Claim, located east of Glendale and extending from Windy Creek south across Cow Creek and up onto the hill where Tunnel 8 pierces the high ridge dividing the Cow Creek and Wolf Creek drainage. About 150 acres were fit for cultivation at the time, the rest being heavily timbered; two simple farmhouses were located on the property at the time of purchase.  Odessa broke up and the immigrants scattererd in the 1880s.  A lawsuit instituted in 1887 resulted in foreclosure proceedings and the lands of the New Odessa Community were returned to the original owners.  The physical evidence of New Odessa faded quickly after the colony broke up. The original buildings had vanished when the father of Carl and Olger Sether purchased the site in 1902.

Here are some photos of the Sether Ranch in the earlier part of the 1900's
